Refauna Project

Refauna Project – Reintroduction of Tapirs in REGUA, Cachoeiras de Macacu

Tapirs have disappeared from the state of Rio de Janeiro due to hunting and loss of habitat.

The Refauna project aims to reintroduce Brazil’s largest land mammal into protected areas of the Atlantic Forest.

The first tapirs, distant relatives of the horse, were reintroduced to REGUA (Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve) at the end of 2017.

Fazenda Desempenho serves as a support base for the project.
